Hyrotyr Exploration

I’ve been putting off posting about this because I’m lazy. But I figured that now it’s advanced far enough for me to post about it, so here’s my idea.

Hyrotyr, the world my big story has inhabited, is actually veru underdeveloped. Until recently, I’ve been kind of writing it on the fly without any real understanding of what culture the characters came from or who they were. I didn’t know what Talodei’s secret was, I didn’t know what the Inner Kingdom was like, and I didn’t really pay attention to it. I just went ahead and made stuff up when I had to give exposition.

However, I had written myself into a corner and really needed to open the world up a bit more. So, here’s my idea in the flesh. I’m writing a series of short stories based in Hyrotyr with the intent of fleshing out the world more. So, I’ve written two of my originally intended three and am starting on the third. They each take place in a different time period and give essential backstory about a character or plot piece. I’ll post the first three stories when I’m finished with the third.

Anyway, here are some of the facts I’ve gone into on them

  1. The area I’m writing about is not all of Hyrotyr. It’s a part called the Archipelago, where the only known human life exists. Beyond the Archipelago, in an area called the Reachwaters, there are no islands, anywhere. The Reachwater is most of the planet, and the Archipelago is the only settles area I know of.
  2. The Inner Kingdom was so successful because they invented the lithrum, and could therefore crush any other opposition with superior technology. They were almost like the Rome of Hyrotyr, although they didn’t last anywhere near as long.
  3. At the height of their power, the Inner Kingdom government commissioned a special genetic experimentation program, where test subjects were turned into super soldiers and were intended to fielded as an army. This failed, and the Inner Kingdom fell because of a group of rebellious test subjects.
  4. The Viridian Crusade think of themselves as the successors to the Inner Kingdom, and want lithri to be the only technology used. Electricity is seldom used, but they want it abolished. The rebellion wants the technology of the lithrum passed to everyone in tandem with electricity. This, despite being a fairly minor ideological conflic, has turned into a huge war.

There are a few plot points that I’m not going into here, because they’re enormous spoilers. You’ll get them in a few days.
